Chapter 9

BEFORE DORI’S FOURTH birthday, Levi decided to move from the North St. Louis City neighborhood home he had shared with Diane.

“I’m moving to the burbs of Illinois. It’s closer to our office. Plus, I think it’s time,” he explained to Jet and his family. “When I pass that boarded up grocery store, it’s a reminder of what insidious crime forced it to close and where the love of my life took her last breath.” He choked, and his father patted his shoulder.

Personally, Jet didn’t know what took him so long. If it were her, she would have put the house on the market the day after the funeral whether the renovations were complete or not. But the move would put her forty minutes out of the way to see her niece.

With her CTP license under her belt, Jet switched companies to accept an upper management position at a large banking institution. Next, she followed Levi across the Mississippi River to the Metro East. Opting to rent out her condo, she purchased a luxurious newly constructed ranch home twenty minutes away from Levi and Dori.

The changes seemed to usher in a new season for everyone, including the younger of Levi’s twin brothers, Seth. After a series of girlfriends, he became serious with Tia Rogers. She was a breath of fresh air to all the testosterone in the Tolliver family. She and Jet became fast friends. The Tollivers seemed pleased, especially Rossi.

Since Diane’s death, Jet had come to struggle with forming friendships with other women. The relationships were fragile—easily broken and painful to suture—unlike with a sister. The petty cat fights over clothes, clean rooms, and phone privileges could never erase the bloodline, the bond, and forgiveness that always followed. Of course, she had Layla, but despite the declaration of doing a better job of staying in touch, their calls slacked.

Without questioning Jet’s status within the family, Seth’s girlfriend insinuated herself into Jet’s life as someone she could shop and do other things with when Seth wasn’t around. Life was good.

During one of Dori’s sleepovers, her niece was in a talkative mood. “I like Miss Karyn. Daddy smiles when he looks at her. Daddy bought me three books and a stuffed animal...Miss Karyn told stories to all the kids.”

Miss Karyn’s name resurfaced throughout story time, and Jet took interest as she turned the pages. Was this woman a threat to worm her way in Levi and Dori’s lives?

“She has a long braid like mine.” Dori looked at Jet with a wide smile.

Dori was mimicking someone who was nothing more than a young teenager flirting with Levi.

“She makes sounds like this—” Dori growled and fixed her hands like claws “—then she whispers...”

Weeks later, Jet realized the threat was real. Somehow, Miss Karyn, a mere bookseller at a mall bookstore, penetrated Levi’s armor to win his affections, and they were spending time together. How could any woman replace her sister and love Levi more than Diane had?

Suddenly, Jet felt the need to start a book club where her frequent visits wouldn’t come under suspicion.
